A video circulating on the internet shows how several people were rescued from a collapsed tunnel in the Democratic Republic of Congo last weekend. According to Gulf Today, local authorities have confirmed that the incident took place at a cobalt mine.
The Democratic Republic of Congo produces 70 percent of the world’s cobalt — a fifth of that comes from small, unregulated mines. Cobalt is used in rechargeable batteries in smartphones and other devices.
The tunnels are dug by hand and cave-ins are not uncommon. According to the World Bank, 60 million people in the country live on less than $2.15 a day.
