“Okay, here’s the first AI-generated image I fell for,” Swiss comedian and internet artist Patrick “Karpi” Karpiczenko, 37, tweeted.
The American model Chrissy Teigen (37) also writes on behalf of many internet users: “I thought the pope’s puffer jacket was real and didn’t think twice about it. There is no way I will survive the future of technology.”
The two mean a photo of Pope Francis (86) that went viral this weekend.
It shows the Pontifex in his usual white robes, including the typical “Zucchetto” (Pope’s cap). The white down jacket also looks extremely real. And very expensive. He is not at all befitting a humble man who named himself after poor Saint Francis of Assisi.

And indeed: the photo is fake. It was not created in Photoshop, but in Midjourney, a program that uses artificial intelligence to create photorealistic images.
At second glance, other inconsistencies are noticeable, such as the glasses that seem to melt into the face. Or holding a misshapen coffee mug.
The site “Snopes.com”, which specializes in fakes, has now exposed the photo as a fake.
The photo of the Pope is taken from the Reddit website. It was posted here by “trippy_art_special” – and shared thousands of times on the internet. The user account is now gone.
Other users immediately joined in on the pope hype and posted more images made with AI, which are easier to spot as fakes. About the Pope in the game style “Grand Theft Auto”. Or a Poser Pope in the back of a sports car.
No matter how innocent the photo gimmicks seem, the consequences are far-reaching. If the current generation of artificial intelligence can produce photos that are so deceptively real, how hard will it be to unmask fakes after a few extra development cycles?
Even more than today, the motto is: be suspicious. Enable common sense. research.
