A new giant spider has been discovered in Australia. Scientists from the Queensland Museum explain that this is a rare species of trapdoor spider, which is only found in the so-called Brigalow Belt in the state of Queensland. They named the spider Euoplos dignitas.
The spider can reach a body length of just over five centimeters, reports the “Neue Zürcher Zeitung”. With her legs she is then the size of an average human hand.
According to the scientists, the Euoplos dignitas lives in open forests and builds its burrows in the black soil of the region. It has already lost much of its habitat to deforestation, making it likely an endangered species, the scientists say.
