An appeals court had previously ruled that Corcoran must testify in the case. Trump had tried to prevent this by citing attorneys’ confidentiality by court order, but had been unsuccessful. Observers expect Corcoran’s statements could be decisive in determining whether or not to indict Trump in the case.

The US Justice Department appointed Special Counsel Jack Smith in November to lead the politically sensitive investigation into Trump’s handling of classified government documents. After leaving the White House, Trump kept a large number of government documents at his private Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, many of them with the highest level of confidentiality. Trump could have been criminalized for prosecution.

Smith also addresses Trump’s role in his supporters’ attack on the US Capitol on January 6, 2021.
