They just wanted to play outside and cuddle a little – they ended up having to be rescued on ropes by the New York City Fire Department (FDNY). Five boys were trapped in a sewer on Staten Island on Tuesday. The boys aged 11 and 12 climbed into a tunnel and got lost in the sewer, the FDNY writes on Facebook.
In desperation, the kids called 911 from a cell phone. The firefighter on the phone tried to calm the children down. “I told them everything will be fine.” He then managed to locate the channel with specific questions, he explains after the rescue operation. Special forces and the New York Police Department were immediately dispatched to rescue the children.
Rescue was an “unprecedented team effort”
The helpers squeezed through the narrow opening and crawled into the system with ropes and breathing masks. They opened additional shafts to facilitate the rescue and found four of the children. The fifth boy was lying nearby and had injuries to his leg.
At a subsequent press conference, the FDNY deputy spokesman emphasized the interaction between the various departments: “It was really a team effort of fire, ambulance and police.” (A)
