An American businessman was killed in a drone strike in Syria on Thursday. Various American media report this, citing a statement from the Pentagon.

Five American soldiers and another businessman were injured in the attack. The secret services assume that the drone was of Iranian origin, the Ministry of Defense further reports.

The drone struck a coalition base near Hasakah in northeastern Syria shortly before 2 p.m. The US retaliated with airstrikes against targets in the region linked to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, 69, said.

“Under the direction of President Joe Biden, 80, I have authorized US Central Command Forces to conduct precision airstrikes in eastern Syria against facilities used by groups affiliated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC),” said the Minister of Defence.

Austin is clear: “No group will attack our troops with impunity.” The Pentagon said two of the wounded soldiers were treated at the scene, while three others and the injured contractor were taken to medical facilities in Iraq. (dzc)
