“We were shot at by the Russians,” says a Swiss war photographer

Alex Kühni travels to places other people flee from. From 2015 to 2019, the Swiss war photographer traveled several times to Syria and northern Iraq to report on the fight against the Islamic State. He also realized photo reports in Lebanon, Gaza, South Sudan, North Korea, the Philippines and North Korea.

In 2018, the 42-year-old won first prize in the “Foreign” category at the Swiss Press Photo Award for his “Sniper War” series.

His last station was the war in Ukraine. A photo he will never forget is from that same war:
