She also filed a lawsuit against the manager and record company of the latin trap and reggaeton singer in a court in San Juan, the capital of Puerto Rico, for violating moral rights and the right to one’s own image, according to her lawyers told the German press on Wednesday. Agency confirmed.
In the 2016 songs “Pa Ti” and 2022 “Dos Mil 16”, a female voice can be heard saying “Bad Bunny, Baby”. According to the lawsuit, Carliz De La Cruz, the rapper and singer’s girlfriend at the time – whose real name is Benito Martínez – recorded the clip in a friend’s bathroom with her cell phone at his request in 2015.
Since then, the recording has been used in the two songs and in numerous concerts, performances and Bad Bunny products without her permission and without crediting her as the copyright holder. The unwanted attention De La Cruz subsequently received on social media and in public left her feeling anxious, intimidated and overwhelmed and prompted her to turn to a psychologist. The lawyer demanded compensation of at least 5 million dollars (4.6 million euros) in eight cases.
According to the lawsuit, the couple began dating in 2011. A year later, they both began to study at the same university in the city of Arecibo, on the north coast of the US territory, and worked in a supermarket. They got engaged, but De La Cruz called it quits first in May 2016 and then again after reconciling the following year.
