Crabs are currently saving the lives of Ukrainian soldiers.

The West supports Ukraine in the fight against Russia. But not only with weapons, but also with equipment. Particularly important among them are associations of the British company Nonwovens. “The bandage has saved many lives, I mean thousands,” doctor Iryna Rybinkina told the BBC. Rybinkina has quit her job and is volunteering with the charity Smart Medical Aid to train Ukrainian frontline doctors.

According to Rybinkina, Smart Medical Aid has so far sent more than 110,000 scratch bandages to the war zone. They reach the Ukrainian army in first aid kits.

The special thing about the bandages: they contain an astringent – made from crab shells. The substance chitosan is extracted from this. When chitosan comes into contact with blood, it swells into a gel and forms a clot. According to the manufacturers, the bandage can stop heavy bleeding within a minute.

The US military also relies on the bandages

Rybinkina colleagues are also enthusiastic about the crab dressings. Many wounded have already been pulled out of the line of fire alive. Otherwise they would have bled to death.

Nonwovens chairman David Lamb told the BBC: “Our product is part of a remarkable British success story, saving the lives of Ukrainian soldiers and civilians caught up in Europe’s worst conflict since World War II.”

The British and American military also use the coated dressings. They were also used in the 2014 Russia-Ukraine conflict when the Russians annexed Crimea. (two)
