Millions in revenue: Prime Minister Sunak publishes tax return

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has released his tax returns for the past three years. The financial situation of the conservative politician, who is married to the daughter of an Indian billionaire, has often been the subject of speculation and controversy against the 42-year-old.

According to the documents now released, his earnings from April 2019 to March 2022 were £4.7 million (currently around €5.3 million). Sunak paid a total of more than a million pounds in tax (1.13 million euros) for this. Capital gains accounted for the bulk of his income. These amounted to 1.6 million pounds (approximately 1.8 million euros) within one tax year.

However, Sunak’s income is likely to be eclipsed by his wife’s. The couple made headlines last year when it was revealed that Sunak’s wife Akshata Murty benefited from a special legal status that allowed her to pay taxes in India instead of the UK. At the time, she held a 0.9 per cent stake in software company Infosys, estimated to be worth more than £500 million, according to the BBC, which is estimated to save her millions in UK taxes. Sunak was the finance minister at the time. His wife has since renounced the special status. (sda/dpa)
