Investigation against employees of Russian Memorial

The organization Memorial, which has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, reports this on its Telegram channel on Tuesday. The maximum sentence for this has recently been increased to 15 years in prison in Russia. In the morning, police officers searched the home of Orlov and other leading members of Memorial.

The searches are related to criminal proceedings initiated earlier this month by Russian authorities for “rehabilitating Nazism”. The relevant law is part of the Russian history policy. This is meant to hide uncomfortable aspects of Russian history. After the start of their war of aggression against Ukraine, the Russian leadership has repeatedly claimed without evidence that the Nazis are in power in Kiev.

The internationally respected human rights organization Memorial was dissolved in 2021 by order of the Russian authorities because it allegedly violated laws. Memorial refused to use the controversial title of “foreign agent.” The organization has been supporting politically persecuted and prisoners for years.
