Racist, misogynist, homophobic: report heavily criticizing London police

The London police force is institutionally racist, misogynistic and homophobic. This is according to an independent research report that was published on Tuesday evening.

Violence against women and girls was not taken seriously. The report’s author, Louise Casey, called on the Metropolitan Police (Met) to make sweeping changes. “It is not our job as a public to protect ourselves from the police. It’s the job of the police to protect us citizens,” Casey said. “Far too many Londoners have lost faith in the police to do this.”

The 363-page report is drastic, harsh and unforgiving, said Casey, an independent MP in the House of Lords. So there is widespread bullying within the authority. “Officers and female employees routinely encounter sexism and misogyny,” it read.

“The Met has failed to protect its female employees or members of the public from police perpetrators who use domestic violence or those who abuse their position for sexual gain.” There are also racist officials and employees and “deep-rooted homophobia,” Casey said.

The report came about after a police officer kidnapped 33-year-old Londoner Sarah Everard using his identity card in March 2021, then raped and killed her. Scandals also surfaced after that. In February, an officer was sentenced to decades in prison after repeatedly raping a dozen women for nearly 20 years. (sda/dpa)
