The Italian defense minister blamed mercenaries for the increase in migration from Africa
Italian Minister of Defense, Guido Crosettowas harshly attacked by the opposition and part of the left-wing public opinion when he stated earlier this week that “the exponential increase in the migration phenomenon is part of a clear hybrid war strategy that he is implementing Wagner’s group using its considerable weight in Africa. Eleonora Evi, leader of the party for environmental protection, pointed out, for example: «The government is looking for another element to justify the failures it is piling up. Crosetto should go to the Parliament to discuss all this together, otherwise he can be accused of propaganda.
Namely, part of the opposition pointed out that Tunisia has surpassed Libya so far this year as the country from which boats with migrants try to cross the Mediterranean, adding that the Russian mercenary company Wagner, led by Yevgeny Prigozhinvery close to President Vladimir Putin, he is not active in Tunisia, while he is active in Libya, which is still in civil war.
However, Wagner’s group is present in several cinemas in sub-Saharan Africa. And, according to an expert from a geopolitical analysis company with whom The Voice spoke confidentially, mercenary violence is contributing to the growing number of Africans trying to emigrate: “Russia has been destabilizing Africa for a long time, that’s nothing new. So Crosetto is not completely wrong, but he should have contextualized his statements better.”
Prigozhin, for his part, assured in an audio recording on Telegram that Wagner’s group had nothing to do with the migrant crisis and insulted Crosett. In addition, the press reported this Thursday that, according to Italian intelligence, Wagner’s mercenaries were offering $15 million reward for eliminating the minister.
Crosetto, who has a reputation as a calm man, played it down, tweeting: “I’m totally calm. I think […] It is one of the many alarms that arrive every day from various sources, which our authorities check for it, and often reject. Public opinion is divided. Some believe it is a set-up to cover up government failures; others sympathize with the minister. And on social media, users – presumably far-right Italians – are also applauding Wagner’s group.
