Air traffic controllers strike: no flights to and from Greece from Thursday No death penalty: Islamic attacker Halloween gets life imprisonment in New York

All flights to and from Greece were canceled on Thursday due to a 24-hour nationwide strike by several Greek unions. The air traffic controllers are also on strike, their union announced on Tuesday.

The strike will start at 00:01 local time (23:01 CET) on Thursday evening. Flights are therefore available again 24 hours later from midnight. Passengers have been informed, Greek airlines said.

The country’s main trade unions have called for the strike. They demand a comprehensive investigation into the serious train accident two weeks ago in central Greece. A head-on collision of a passenger train with a freight train killed 57 people, most of them under the age of 30. Since then there have been repeated strikes and demonstrations in Greece.

A station master in the city of Larisa was proven to have sent the passenger train on the wrong track, but the investigation reveals that, in addition to human error, the catastrophic conditions on the Greek railways and political incompetence were the causes of the accident. (sda/awp/dpa)
