According to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), tropical storm “Freddy” is one of the longest-lasting tropical cyclones since records began.
The cyclone formed off the northwest coast of Australia on February 6. After crossing the entire southern Indian Ocean, “Freddy” made landfall on February 21, first in Madagascar and then on February 24 in Mozambique, causing severe destruction.
In a rare “loop train” it then returned to Madagascar last week with even more power and even more rain, reaching Mozambique again on Saturday evening and finally Malawi early on Monday.
At least 99 people were killed in Malawi alone, according to the national civil protection agency. In Mozambique, at least four people died as the storm passed for the second time, bringing the total death toll there to 14. A total of 17 people were killed in Madagascar.
The death toll is likely much higher, as information is scarce due to damage to telephone and internet infrastructure. According to the authorities, many people are still missing.
According to the predictions, “Freddy” should go back to sea during the week and weaken in the process. (sda/apa/afp)
