For more than a year, a violent war has been raging in Ukraine. Dead, missing, refugee and traumatized – for what? A Russian politician now asks himself this question and publishes a statement about Russia.

“Russia, Russia… What have you done to each other?” Alfred Koch writes on his Telegram channel. He was Deputy Prime Minister under President Boris Yeltsin. In the 1990s, Yeltsin was the first democratically elected head of state in Russian history.

Koch is visibly concerned about what has become of the Russia he knew. “How will you, my former citizens, bear the burden of all your crimes when you finally realize the great evil you have committed,” he writes.

Dimitri Nabokoff shares the text on his Twitter account. He himself is a Russia observer and talks about the most important political events in Russia in his podcast “Russia Watcher”. About Koch’s statements he writes: “A strong text.”

In 2001, the economist Koch also headed the media holding company Gazprom-Media, which is close to the government. Over the past decade, he has increasingly criticized Russian foreign policy.

Alfred Koch blames the war on the Putin regime

The cook, who now lives in Germany, mainly blames the “pointlessness” of the war in Ukraine. He says:

There isn’t a crime they haven’t already committed. By “they” he probably means the Russian government under Vladimir Putin. “They spent a lot of money and killed hundreds of thousands of their own people and other people,” he writes. In his view, they have destroyed the future of their country and the reputation of their people. And what did they get in return, he asks? Nothing. Nothing but the hatred and contempt of humanity.

Russia faces decades of isolation

Russia’s territorial gains are “ridiculous”. According to Koch, the Russians will gain nothing but ruins, mounds of broken war equipment and endless minefields that will take decades to clear. But something else will hit the Russians even worse: decades of isolation and contempt.

“The lives of a generation of Russians have been flushed down the toilet and will now turn into pitiful survival and impotent envy of the rest of humanity,” Koch wrote in his statement, according to Nabokoff.

Koch says the Russian government no longer believes in victory. We are now frantically searching for ways to maintain the status quo. He says:

Koch is sure: “You ruined everything.” The Russians have lost the respect of the world – their lives, the lives of their children, the future of Russia. “You spent all the wealth that God gave you on murder and destruction,” says the former Russian politician. The Russians could have made their lives “more beautiful, richer, more interesting” – but everything revolves around revenge and expansion. Koch makes a clear statement that Putin should not like at all.

Russia does not have the potential for a center of power

Russia is too small to play an independent role. According to Koch, the country cannot be a center of power. In addition, it is only moderately developed, with poor infrastructure and an archaic economy. According to Koch, Russians are largely low-educated and, with few exceptions, low-qualified.

The Russians have yet to make this sad discovery means cooking. The country also became caught in the “claws of China” by turning away from the West. Apparently Russia has yet to feel what that means. Despite all the criticism, Koch still has a love for Russia. He says:

But according to Nabokoff, his voice will not be heard much in Russia. Under his tweet, he writes that Koch has no reach among the general population of Russia. Moreover, he no longer has any political influence. “In three days it will be forgotten”he says.
