German builds heaviest bicycle in the world – from scrap

The name sounds inconspicuous, but “Klein Johanna” is anything but small. On the contrary: almost five and a half meters long, almost two meters high and a weight of 2.18 tons. This makes Johanna the heaviest bicycle in the world, as confirmed by the “Record Institute for Germany”.

The huge bike was built by Sebastian Beutler (39) from the German state of Saxony-Anhalt. The inventor found the parts in the junkyard, as reported by “Spiegel”. The German even wants to go on holiday with his creation. The bicycle weighs as much as two small cars. With his homemade monster bike, Beutler surpassed the previous record by almost 800 kilograms. The 39-year-old presented his self-made bicycle at the cycling fair Cyclingworld in Düsseldorf last weekend.

Little Johanna has a truck transmission connected to a bicycle gear system. The tinkerer collected all the necessary materials, except for the rims, from scrap yards. The bike has 35 forward and seven reverse gears and even a sturdy cast iron can holder for longer rides.

“You Got a Bang, Let It”

Incredible: the heavy machine can actually be moved by pedaling power with the legs. “I can even pull 15 tons with it without any problems,” says Sebastian Beutler to “Spiegel”. The vehicle’s engine only runs the alternator and charges the mobile phone.

The inventor put three years and about 2500 hours of work into his project. His acquaintances had long declared him crazy: “You have a bang, never mind.” Beutler is planning a road trip to the Baltic Sea next summer, because the megabike is even approved for normal road traffic. “That’s 389 kilometers and it takes me about a month.” The German is not afraid that his machine will be stolen. He doesn’t even have a padlock to lock it. (lia)
