The rental car with three Germans and two Swiss came off a muddy road in the Masai Mara reserve in southern Kenya on Saturday and overturned, local police reported on Sunday.

Two people were killed, including a German and a Swiss, writes the AP news agency. Another tourist was injured. While the German died at the scene of the accident, the person from Switzerland succumbed to his injuries in hospital, the portal “Kenyans” writes.

The Kenyan authorities initially gave no information about the age or place of origin of the tourists. A Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said the embassy in Nairobi is looking into the matter and is in contact with local authorities.

Roads that are difficult to drive on in wet months

The Masai Mara in southern Kenya, together with the Serengeti in northern Tanzania, forms one of the largest protected areas in Africa. The annual migration of hundreds of thousands of wildebeest, gazelle and zebra attracts visitors from all over the world, especially from July to September.

Lions, leopards, buffaloes, elephants, giraffes and many other animals are also native to the region. Despite the high tourism, the park has bad roads in many places, which are difficult to drive on, especially in the wetter months of the year. (male/SDA)
