At least one person was killed and many injured in a bomb attack on a cultural center in Afghanistan on Saturday. While the interior ministry in the capital Kabul initially confirmed only one guard killed and eight injured, the center itself later gave the number killed and 30 injured. According to the NGO Afghan Journalist Center (AFJC), 16 journalists were injured.

According to the organisers, an award ceremony for journalists took place at the cultural center in the north part of the country, Mazar-i-Sharif. Twenty-five journalists attended, as well as religious scholars and community officials. There used to be a large army camp near Mazar-i-Scharif.

Initially, there was no self-incrimination for the attack in the Shiite cultural center. In the past, the terrorist militia Islamic State (IS) had carried out repeated attacks. IS is battling the militant Islamist Taliban, who have been back in power since August 2021, and considers Shiites mortal enemies. Most Afghans are Sunni Muslims and Shiites are a minority.
