Father and son killed by Russians in battle for Bakhmut

Together they fought for their homeland: father Oleg and son Nikita side by side defended the city of Bakhmut against Russian troops. The two were subsequently killed.

An artillery shell landed next to them. Oleg allegedly tried to save his son’s life and threw himself at him to protect him from the explosion. Vain. Both died. The sad news spread on social media on Friday, with many users calling the two “heroes”.

Bachmut, which used to have a population of 70,000 and was about the size of St. Gallen, is hard-fought and now largely destroyed. The Russians want to conquer the city at all costs and have surrounded the city on three sides. The situation for Ukrainians is becoming increasingly precarious. Hundreds are killed every day, thousands have already lost their lives.

Battle for the “Fortress” Bakhmut

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky (45) still wants to keep the city. Otherwise, Russian troops would have “free rein to other Ukrainian cities in the direction of Donetsk,” he said in an interview with US broadcaster CNN.

Ukrainian Land Forces commander Olexander Syrski, 57, also said: “Each day of defending the city gives us time to build up reserves and prepare for future offensives.” Moreover, not only Ukrainians die in the war of attrition. According to Syrski, the Russian mercenary group Wagner is also losing its best units.

Shocking Wagner tactics

Their leader Yevgeny Prigoschin (61) relies on brutal tactics. He lets ill-equipped fighters, recruited from prisons, rush into Ukraine’s defenses. Sometimes these mercenaries would also wear Ukrainian uniforms, which would be against the laws of war.

When the Ukrainians start firing, they betray their position. Then the Russian artillery starts firing. Only then do the regular Russian soldiers move up. The ex-prisoners of the first attack wave are often killed in this tactic. Their bodies are left in the fields. (nad)
