Topless allowed in Berlin swimming pools

In the future, all visitors should be able to swim topless in Berlin’s swimming pools. Justice in the German capital announced on Thursday that swimming without a shirt should also be possible for women and people “with a woman’s breast”.

The background to this is a complaint from a woman to the ombudsman service of the National Office for Equal Treatment and Against Discrimination. The 33-year-old German was thrown out of a swimming pool in December after she refused to cover her breasts.

Bathing regulations “gender equivalent applied”

According to her, she was not allowed to go to the swimming pool “topless”, although the house and bathing rules of the bathing establishments only require wearing “standard swimwear”. As the ombudsman now reports, the discrimination complaint was well-founded, the bathing establishments would apply their house and bathing rules in a gender-equal manner in the future.

“Now it comes down to the regulation being applied consistently and that no more evictions or restraining orders are issued,” said the head of the ombudsman, Doris Liebscher. (AFP/man)
