After protests, Georgia in the South Caucasus withdrew a controversial bill that introduced a registry for “foreign agents”. The government party Georgian Dream announced this on Thursday in the capital Tbilisi.
On Tuesday evening and Wednesday there were large protests because parliament had passed a law in first reading that was reminiscent of Russian conditions.
For example, organizations financed more than 20 percent with money from abroad should have been registered as so-called “foreign agents”. Otherwise, sanctions threatened. In Russia, an almost identical law has existed since 2012, on the basis of which media and organizations critical of the government are systematically harassed, suppressed or forced to flee abroad.
