Support in Russian society for the war in Ukraine remains high, according to an opinion poll. According to Russian sociologist Lev Gudkov, whose center surveys people in Russia on a monthly basis, it is between 70 and 75 percent.
The German news medium n-tv reported on it for the first time. Accordingly, Gudkow was “appalled by the magnitude of the approval”.
He had expected a “much sharper and more negative public reaction to the declaration of war”. Instead, the people had turned out to be “even more degenerate, even more submissive and passive.”
How meaningful is that?
The Levada Institute’s polls should be viewed critically in the context of Putin’s world of bans, propaganda, political persecution and media censorship.
The question arises not only whether the survey figures can be believed, but also whether people in Russia still dare to express their opinion publicly.
The proportion of society that is firmly against Putin and the war is 10 to 12 percent. At the same time, according to n-tv, 44 percent of Russians are in favor of immediate peace talks, even though Russia has not yet achieved its goals. Gudkov sees media censorship as a reason for the widespread support among Russians. Here you can read (on T-Online) more about how Putin uses his propaganda during the war.
