On average, a femicide is committed every six hours, the Brazilian news portal “G1” reported on Wednesday – International Women’s Day.

This is according to a special study by the Violence Monitor, which the media group “Globo” regularly compiles with the University of São Paulo and the Forum for Public Safety. Femicide is when a woman is killed because of her gender.

All in all, the number of all homicides in Latin America’s largest country fell slightly in the past year compared to the previous year. The femicide rate, on the other hand, is the highest since 2015. That year, then-Brazilian president and current head of the BRICS development bank, Dilma Rousseff, signed a law providing for harsh punishments for killing women and girls. . Murders due to domestic violence or on the basis of sex were explicitly referred to as femicides in the legal guideline.

Violence against women has been widespread in Brazil and throughout Latin America for decades. In many cases, the killers are partners or ex-partners. Crimes often go unsolved due to cultural factors, ecclesiastical influence, impunity, and inefficiency of authorities. In other Latin American countries, especially Argentina, Chile and Mexico, more and more women are speaking up and demanding their rights.
