Doctors in the Czech Republic removed a 200-gram hairball from the abdomen of a young patient. The girl suffers from the extremely rare Rapunzel syndrome, in which people pull their hair out and eat it, reports the hospital in Opava, Silesia.
This is a very serious disease, treating surgeon Matus Peteja said Wednesday. In the worst case, there would have been a risk of tissue death. The child survived the operation, which took place at the end of February, without complications.
A blockage of the digestive tract is imminent
According to the information provided, the operation was performed minimally invasively through the stomach wall using a laparoscopy. The hairball covered an area of about 20 by 8 centimeters.
Rapunzel syndrome is a mental disorder that can have serious consequences. In addition to abdominal pain, the hairball can cause a blockage in the digestive tract and even lead to death. The syndrome is named after the Grimm Brothers fairytale character Rapunzel, who has an unusually long braid of hair. (SDA)
