Son of Mexican drug lord “El Chapo” denies identity 105 migrants rescued from Mediterranean Sea

Early in his extradition trial, the son of imprisoned Mexican drug kingpin Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán denied being the suspect originally wanted by US authorities.

“I am not the person they think I am that the United States wants,” Ovidio Guzmán said Tuesday (local time) at the trial in Mexico, local media reported. During the hearing, the 32-year-old was formally notified of the extradition request by a judge.

The son of “El Chapo” is charged with multiple crimes in the United States, including drug trafficking, organized crime and money laundering. His father, the former head of the infamous Sinaloa cartel, was one of the most powerful drug dealers in the world until his arrest. He was extradited to the United States and sentenced to life imprisonment in 2019.

Ovidio Guzmán was arrested in January in Culiacan, in the northwestern state of Sinaloa. Gang members then blocked numerous roads with burning cars and fought fiercely with the police and military. According to the Defense Ministry, 29 people were killed in the shooting. (sda/dpa)
