More than 30 countries, including Switzerland, have expressed concern over the lack of research results nearly three years after the explosion at the port of Beirut. On Tuesday before the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, they denounced “interference” and the political situation in Lebanon.
The explosion on August 4, 2020 killed more than 200 people because ammonium nitrate was not properly stored. Thousands were injured. The catastrophe triggered a new political and economic crisis in the country, as critics from more than 30 countries in the Human Rights Council complained.
They called on the authorities to fulfill their international human rights obligations by allowing the judiciary to do its job. Victims must be compensated quickly.
They also have the right to demonstrate peacefully to demand the prosecution of those responsible. State representatives also called for an independent and speedy investigation. (sda)
