China warns the United States against further tensions with provocations. If the United States “does not apply the brakes, but continues to follow the wrong path,” even guardrails will no longer be able to stop a derailment, Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang told journalists at today’s annual meeting of the People’s Congress on Tuesday. Dan certainly threatened “conflicts and confrontations,” the diplomat said, warning of “catastrophic consequences.”
According to Qin Gang, the US sees China as its main adversary and the biggest geopolitical challenge. The consequence of this assumption is that US policy towards China has deviated completely from the “rational path”. Although Washington speaks of competition, in reality it wants to suppress China in all areas.
Taiwan issue
Qin Gang compared the relationship to an unfair Olympic race: “If an athlete, instead of focusing on trying his best, always tries to outsmart or even hurt the other, then that is not a fair competition, it is a vicious confrontation and foul play,” China’s foreign minister said. He called for relations to get back on track. This is not an option, but a necessity.
Against the background of the Taiwan dispute, Qin Gang called on the United States to stop interfering “in China’s internal affairs”. He condemned US arms sales to the island democratic republic. “We will continue to work for a peaceful reunification with the utmost sincerity and commitment,” the minister said. However, China reserves the right to “take all necessary measures,” he reiterated the well-known Chinese position.
China considers Taiwan part of the People’s Republic and eventually threatens to conquer it if “reunification” cannot be achieved in any other way. However, Taiwan has never been part of the communist People’s Republic established in 1949 and has long considered itself independent.
«Real multilateralism, mutual respect»
China also hopes that Europeans will become more independent from the United States. At the press conference, Qin Gang advocated for the European Union, which always regards China as a “comprehensive strategic partner”.
“We hope that Europe, having endured the suffering of the war in Ukraine, will learn from its pain and achieve true long-term strategic autonomy and stability,” said Qin Gang. In doing so, he indirectly expressed his wish that the Europeans would distance themselves from the Americans, who accuse China of dominance.
China wants to work with the European side “to maintain genuine multilateralism, mutual respect and cooperation for the benefit of both”. Strengthening the partnership between China and the EU can bring more stability, security and positive energy to the world. (SDA/no)
