A fire at a Rohingya refugee camp in Bangladesh has destroyed 2,000 shelters. Sunday’s fire at Kutupalong camp in Cox’s Bazar district left nearly 10,000 people homeless, Mohammad Shamsuddoza, a senior representative of the local refugee commission, told the German news agency. It took firefighters several hours to get the fire under control.
The UN refugee agency UNHCR even mentioned some 12,000 homeless people on Twitter and announced that it would support the victims of the fire together with its local partners. Hospitals and educational institutions were also destroyed by the fire. The cause of the fire was initially unclear, according to police. So far there have been no reports of deaths or injuries.
About one million Rohingya live in the world’s largest concentration of refugee camps in Bangladesh. Hundreds of thousands fled their predominantly Buddhist homeland of Myanmar in 2017 as the army launched an offensive against the Muslim minority. The UN describes their persecution as genocide. Bangladesh hopes they will return to Myanmar. So far, several repatriation attempts have failed due to concerns over the safety of the refugees. (SDA/AFP/kes)
