At least 13 people have been killed in a head-on collision between a bus and a motorcycle taxi in Peru. Sunday’s head-on collision on the Panamericana highway sparked a fire that killed people, authorities said. Six injured people have been taken to hospital.
The causes of the accident were initially unclear. The driver of the bus has been arrested. The accident happened in the morning hours (local time) in the northern region of Áncash. The bus with more than 50 passengers was on its way from the capital Lima to the Piura region.
Serious accidents are common on Peruvian highways. Causes include excessive speeds, the poor condition of many roads and the lack of road signs and police checks. (sda/afp)
