Self-help author aims to end ‘corporate tyranny’
Self-help author Marianne Williamson officially announced her candidacy for the Democratic nomination for President of the United States this Saturday and her intention to run against Joe Biden, who has not yet confirmed whether he will run for re-election. “As of today, I am a candidate for the office of President of the United States” and “I’m asking for your donations, your volunteering, your help, because it’s our turn,” said the 70-year-old author at an event held in Washington, reports Efe.
With his announcement, the news he already announced a few days ago, Williamson becomes the first progressive politician to make official her intentions to run for president of the United Statessince Biden has not officially announced his candidacy.
Nevertheless, the 80-year-old president has repeatedly hinted that he will run again, and the media hope that he will soon launch his campaign, an advertisement that it could be postponed due to the health of the president since the day before it was known that on February 16, a skin lesion was successfully operated on, which turned out to be cancer. Williamson thus joins the list of pre-candidates for the presidency.
There are already two on the Republican side: former president Donald Trump (2017-2021) and former US ambassador to the UN and former governor of South Carolina Nikki Haley. All of them will have to go through an intricate process of “caucuses”, primaries and conventions to convince their own party that they are ideal candidates for the presidential elections in 2024.
The self-help guru already ran in 2019 for the Democratic nomination for the 2020 presidential election, but he withdrew before the vote due to lack of support from the electorate. Williamson was one of the more progressive candidates, ideologically closer to Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren than to Biden himself.
In his speech this Saturday, he clearly stated his vision of the world and his goal, put an end to “corporate tyranny”. “I am reminded and guided by the words of Franklin Delano Roosevelt who said that a man in trouble is not a free man. Not all chains are visible, and it’s time to break free from the shackles that weigh down the 64% of Americans who live hand-to-hand.”
