Moderate Republican Larry Hogan has dropped out of his party’s candidacy for president. The 66-year-old, who is considered a critic of former President Donald Trump, is said to have similar ambitions. In an op-ed published Sunday in the New York Times, he wrote, “After eight years of serving the people of Maryland with heart and soul, I don’t want to put my family through another grueling campaign just to have that experience. ” However, he is grateful to everyone who has encouraged him to run for president over the years.

Hogan served as governor of Maryland for eight years. After two terms in office, he was forced to resign last November. After the Republicans’ poor performance in the US midterm elections, Hogan did not shy away from criticism of Trump. He said Trump cost the party three elections. In the New York Times, Hogan warned his party against supporting Trump as a candidate in the party’s internal primary. “To be a successful ruling party again, we need to get away from Mr. Trump,” he wrote. For too long, Republicans have been denied a real debate about what the party actually stands for, aside from allegiance to Trump.

Trump and former US ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, have so far submitted an application to Republicans for president in the 2024 election. 70-year-old author Marianne Williamson announced her candidacy to Democrats on Saturday. She would be US President Joe Biden’s first internal party competitor if he were to run again, but her candidacy is considered almost hopeless.
