At a cinema in the West German city of Essen, visitors rioted and provoked the cancellation of the film screening. During the performance, guests stood up and climbed over the seats, the police said in the Ruhrstad on Sunday.

The guests also threw snacks through the cinema on Saturday night during the incident. The staff stopped the film and ordered the 440 viewers to leave the room. “Because the mood was heated and almost 40 visitors did not want to leave the cinema, several police patrol cars entered,” the report said. The officials had enforced the cinema’s house rules.

Police criticize ‘would-be influencers’

According to the police, the riot may be related to a trend on the short video platform Tiktok. “Some people are exhibiting such anti-social behavior that should lead to a film being canceled,” Essen officials said. “The fact that this spoils the evening for many decent people does not seem to interest budding ‘social media stars’ and so-called ‘influencers’ in the slightest,” the police criticized.

According to the information, no criminal offenses were detected in the incident in Essen. However, claims for damages can be submitted.

An incident similar to that in Essen was also reported from a cinema in Bremen. Several young visitors threw popcorn and nachos at each other on Saturday evening, according to the police in the Hanseatic city. There were “fights and riots” inside and outside the cinema. The film screenings were cancelled. According to their own statements, the police were in action with a large contingent. (SDA)
