For three decades, Italy’s most wanted criminal was on the run. On January 16 of this year, mafia boss Matteo Messina Denaro (61) was arrested by the police in Palermo.

Since then, more and more details about the criminal activities of the head of the Sicilian Cosa Nostra and his accomplices have come to light. As Italian media now report, the police have been able to achieve another success in the field of assistants: they managed to arrest Denaro’s sister (67).

Sister managed notes with encrypted codes

According to the “Corriere della sera” she also has a lot on her counter. So she would not only have received money for her brother and super mafioso, but also built relationships with other mafiosi. According to the police, she would also have acted as treasurer. In her house there are numerous large portrait paintings of her brother.

But that’s not all: she managed the so-called “pizzini”, small pieces of paper with encrypted codes, for her brother. It’s an old mafia tradition that allowed her fugitive brother to communicate with allies.

She disobeyed instructions, then they were exposed

In the end, however, the “Pizzini” killed her and the mafia boss Denaro, who committed or had more than 50 murders carried out. Because the 67-year-old did not burn the notes as instructed by her brother, the detectives were initially able to arrest Matteo Messina Denaro and now the sister herself. This is reported by the Italian police.

While her brother was sentenced to life imprisonment for the numerous murders and other crimes, it is still unclear what punishment awaits his sister. (dzc)
