The Russian regional politician is due to appear in court next week. The reason: After the speech to the nation by Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin (70), Mikhail Abdalkin, deputy head of the regional Duma in Samara, shared footage on social media showing him in front of the screen – he had spaghetti over his ears . In Russia, everyone understands this gesture.
The expression “hanging noodles on your ears” in Russian means something like being lied to. Abdalkin has now shared on social media that Novokuybyshev’s court will hear his case on March 7. His party had previously issued a warning against him. Abdalkin wants to “fight” and prove his innocence.
Abdalkin is celebrated as a hero
Since the invasion of Ukraine, Russia has increasingly taken action against public criticism, for example when the armed forces are criticized. Critics are often fined and imprisoned.
Among other things, Abdalkin had uploaded a video to the Russian Facebook clone “VKontakte” – with an ironic description. The deputy speaker of parliament in Samara asked him to see Putin’s speech. “I totally agree, a great achievement,” he wrote wryly. “I haven’t heard anything like it in 23 years. I’m pleasantly surprised.” Abdalkin’s tongue-in-cheek posts have been well received on social media, with some hailing him as a hero.
In his party, however, the posts were less well received. A spokesman for the Communist Party described the action as “stupid” and announced that the incident would be handled internally. The Communist Party is considered loyal to the Kremlin. (nad)
