The detention of Belgian MEP Marc Tarabella has been extended by one month.

The bribery scandal, which became public at the end of 2022, concerns the alleged influence of the governments of Qatar and Morocco on decisions of the EU parliament. The public prosecutor has charged the suspects with corruption, money laundering and membership of a criminal organization.

Alleged mastermind Antonio Panzeri is also imprisoned. In January, he signed an agreement with the prosecutor’s office in which he promised to make an integral contribution to clearing up the scandal.

Kaili’s partner Francesco Giorgi was allowed to leave prison at the end of February under certain conditions. The Italian must continue his detention under house arrest with an electronic ankle bracelet. Due to possible involvement in the scandal, European parliamentarian Andrea Cozzolino is also under house arrest following a court decision in Naples. (sda/dpa)
