He is said to have shot his wife Maggie († 52) with a rifle and his son Paul († 22) with a pistol on 7 June 2021. We are talking about the prominent American lawyer Alex Murdaugh (54). He was tried on Thursday.
Murdaugh, whose case generated much publicity in the United States, was found guilty by a jury of the murder of his wife and son.
Nearly 100 charges against Murdaugh
As reported by CNN, prosecutors have indicated they will seek a life sentence without the possibility of parole for the murders to spare him the death penalty.
The attorney committed the crime at the family’s South Carolina estate. Murdaugh, who comes from a well-known legal family, had alerted police at the time and said he had found the bodies. Later, however, the lawyer came under suspicion – and he was eventually charged with double murder in July 2022.
Murdaugh had denied the crimes. However, he had to admit in court that he had lied about his presence at the crime scene. His voice can be heard on a cell phone video recorded by his son Paul shortly before the fatal shooting.
In addition to the double murder, the attorney faces 99 separate charges. These stem from a series of alleged financial crimes, including defrauding his clients, his former law firm, and the government out of approximately $9 million. (AFP/dzc)
