“We chose kamikaze drones. There were two explosions that severely damaged the front part of the plane and the central part of the dish-shaped radar,” Belarusian opposition leader Aliaksandr Azarau told n-tv. According to Azarau, his Warsaw-based organization BYPOL, together with partisans in Belarus, prepared the attack on the Beriev A-50 aircraft. “This machine is unique and very expensive, it costs about $330 million. The sanctions make it almost impossible to restore them.”

Belarusian investigators had even discovered drone control equipment near Matschulishchy airfield, where the A-50 is based. The attackers are said to have left Belarus in the meantime. According to Azaraus, the aircraft is out of service and will no longer be able to fly – but that is not clear. Damage to the machine can be seen on satellite imagery as of Tuesday; However, it does not indicate how serious the damage is:

The damage to Russian warfare could be enormous if his assessment is correct: “The A-50 is a kind of flying headquarters,” explains Azarau. “This aircraft guarded the territory of Ukraine and EU countries and passed on the coordinates of potential targets to fighter jets, which then attacked these targets.”

According to Azarau, Russia has only four such machines, other sources such as the British Ministry of Defense speak of six operational Russian A-50s, including the damaged one. According to the partisans, Russia has now sent special equipment to Belarus to dismantle the stricken A-50. “There is also information that other Russian aircraft based in Belarus have left the country and been transferred to Russian airfields,” Azarau said.

His organization BYPOL was founded after the election fraud committed by the Lukashenko regime in 2020 and the subsequent suppression of the protests in Belarus. The aim is to overthrow the Russian-backed government in Minsk. “Lukashenko is a criminal and according to the constitution, every Belarusian has the right to stop a crime he witnessed,” explains Aliaksandr Azarau. “In addition, there are Russian soldiers in our country who use our territory for attacks on Ukraine.
