Vietnam has a new president

After a corruption scandal, communist-led Vietnam has a new president. Vo Van Thuong (53) was elected head of state on Thursday during a special session in the capital Hanoi.

The term of office of the Politburo member runs until 2026. Predecessor Nguyen Xuan Phuc (68) resigned in mid-January. He claimed responsibility for a scandal involving corona test kits and bribes for seats on repatriation flights to Vietnam during the pandemic.

Thuong is from Vinh Long province in the Mekong Delta and studied philosophy. He previously served as deputy party leader in Ho Chi Minh City, the Southeast Asian country’s largest metropolis. With a population of nearly 100 million, Vietnam is one of the fastest growing economies in the world. (SDA)
