US imposes new sanctions on supporters of North Korea US President Biden wants to make Julie Su the new Secretary of Labor

The US has imposed new sanctions on three companies and two individuals accused of generating revenue for the North Korean government. “North Korea’s illicit weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missile programs” threaten international and regional stability, the US Treasury Department said in Washington on Wednesday. The US is determined to target the regime’s illegal networks that generate revenue from these destabilizing activities.

The punitive measures will freeze all assets of those affected in the United States. In addition, people, banks and other companies that do business with them in the future are also threatened with sanctions – a step that should make international business considerably more difficult for those affected.

North Korea is already subject to strong UN Security Council sanctions. The US, South Korea, Japan and the European Union have also repeatedly decided on their own punitive measures against North Korea in recent years. UN resolutions prohibit nuclear testing in the largely isolated country, as well as the testing of ballistic missiles, which can be equipped with a nuclear warhead depending on the design. (sda/dpa)
