Sahra Wagenknecht plays down Russian atrocities

“We now have a problem.” With these words, moderator Louis Klamroth (33) interrupted his ARD program ‘Difficult, but fair’ on Monday evening. “Sorry, but I can’t leave it like this.” It is his responsibility not to publish “false messages” with his program. The reason: the statements of Sahra Wagenknecht (53).

The left-wing politician had put the atrocities of the Russians in the war in Ukraine into perspective. “There are criminal acts on both sides, it’s the same in every war,” she said.

The UN human rights commissioner is said to have “repeatedly pointed this out”. “Well, I mean there are such Russian attacks and it’s horrible and horrible.” But that’s only part of the war. “Wars are always associated with war crimes,” said the left-wing politician. The other guests disagreed.

Women and girls were raped for days

Moderator Klamroth then shot a single-player movie. The clip explained that the UN had no evidence of rapes by Ukrainian soldiers. On the contrary: the UN Special Representative Pramila Patten (64) is said to have said that it was clearly a war strategy of the Russians to beat and rape women and girls for days on end. That’s a fact.

Wagenknecht objected and explained that this was not true. Obviously, crimes always happen. Weighing who committed more is “inactive”.

“We don’t feel represented by all those green tank madmen”

Sahra Wagenknecht made the news in recent days because of her Berlin demonstration for peace and against arms deliveries, which she launched together with women’s rights activist Alice Schwarzer (80). The two also launched the “Manifesto for Peace” petition, which has been signed by hundreds of thousands. Said Saturday protest was attended by people from the extreme left and right, as well as pro-Russian demonstrators.

In her speech on Saturday, Wagenknecht pleaded for stopping arms deliveries to Ukraine and starting peace negotiations with Russia. She criticized NATO, the US and German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (42): “We don’t feel represented by all those green tank madmen.” (TVA/AFP)
