On Sunday, two battalions from another unit had already been dispatched to prevent further escalation. A battalion consists of several hundred soldiers.
After a Palestinian attack on the West Bank in which two Israelis were killed, Israeli settlers rioted there on Sunday night. One Palestinian was killed and hundreds injured. Dozens of houses, shops and cars were set on fire. The settlers’ actions are classified as “terrorist acts,” the Israeli military representative said on Monday. Ten suspects have already been arrested.
The settlers’ riots kept the soldiers busy, complicating the search for the Palestinian suspect after the attack, the military representative said. Apparently he fled on foot. The army is also investigating reports that an Israeli gunman opened fire on two Israeli journalists during the riots. However, they were unharmed.
Twelve Israelis and one Ukrainian have been killed in Palestinian attacks since the beginning of the year. During the same period, 63 Palestinians were killed – for example, they were killed in clashes with the Israeli army or in their own attacks.
Israel captured the West Bank and East Jerusalem in 1967. Today, more than 600,000 Israeli settlers live there. The Palestinians claim the territories for an independent state of Palestine with the Arab-influenced eastern part of Jerusalem as its capital.
