The incident happened Monday at the police station in Trieben, about 110 kilometers from Salzburg, according to the Styrian security authority. The suspect did not resist his arrest. Officials from the neighboring state of Salzburg took over the investigation.
The incident happened during a staff meeting in the morning. It is still too early to say whether the 46-year-old officer shot the 58-year-old colleague on purpose or through negligence, a police spokesman for the German news agency said.
Rescue workers arrived at the station shortly after the shot was fired. However, they were unable to resuscitate the injured officer. A crisis intervention team took care of his family and colleagues.
