According to a media report, a German tourist and his local driver have been killed in a serious road accident in Thailand. The accident happened early Sunday evening on a highway in the Sai Yok district northwest of Bangkok, the Bangkok Post newspaper quoted police spokesman Sarit Tikhasuk as saying on Monday.

A German couple was traveling in a minibus with a local tourist guide and driver when an oncoming SUV suddenly swerved across the center line. The two vehicles collided head-on. The devastated wreckage of the van could be seen in photographs.

According to the information, the driver of the minibus died instantly. All other occupants of the vehicles were injured in the accident and were taken to a nearby hospital. The German died there from his serious injuries. His wife is still being treated at the clinic. The police have launched an investigation into the cause of the accident. It is not known where the couple came from in Germany.

The Sai Yak region is located in the province of Kanchanaburi and is known, among other things, for the national park of the same name. The area with its numerous waterfalls and limestone cliffs is very popular with local and foreign tourists. (sda/dpa)
