30 dead in boat accident with migrants off southern Italy

At least 27 refugees were killed in a boat accident off the Italian coast on Sunday. The boat sank off the coast near the town of Crotone in southern Italy early this morning, local media reported. The Italian news agency Ansa estimates at least 30 deaths. The search for the missing persons continued and was hampered by strong waves.

According to AGI news agency, the overloaded boat broke in two through the high seas. According to a rescuer, the victims included a “newborn baby a few months old” as reported by AGI.

Due to its geographical location, Italy is a particularly frequent destination for migrants from North Africa to Europe. About 105,000 migrants arrived in Italy last year and thousands have already arrived this year. Many people have drowned in the dangerous crossing of the Mediterranean Sea in recent years.
