The US government warns of increasing defense cooperation between Russia and Iran. Tehran’s support for the Russian military continues to grow, National Security Council communications director John Kirby said in Washington on Friday. “In return, Russia has offered Iran unprecedented defense cooperation, including missiles, electronics and air defense.” The US assumes Russia can supply fighter jets to Iran, Kirby said. In November, Iran delivered tank ammunition to Moscow for Russia’s offensive war against Ukraine.
The United States had previously imposed sanctions on Iran for military aid to Moscow. Increasing defense cooperation between Iran and Russia will not only complicate the situation in Ukraine, Kirby warned. It could also complicate the security situation in the Middle East for US partners. Tehran wants to buy additional military equipment from Russia, including attack helicopters and radar equipment.
