The authorities suspect that those arrested may be members of the New IRA

A police officer from Northern Ireland was seriously injured after he was shot on Wednesday night in Omagh townin an event for which three people have already been arrested, and the circumstances of which have not yet been clarified.

The victim, John Caldwell, was shot several times by two gunmen shortly after coaching a group of children in soccer. His son was with him, and there were several witnesses, including numerous minors.

Northern Ireland Police Chief Constable Simon Byrne confirmed the arrest of three suspects aged 38, 45 and 47 in Omagh and Coalisland. Investigators are looking into whether there is any link with the New IRA, according to the BBC. British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak expressed his dismay at the “unfortunate” attack. In Northern Ireland, the condemnation was also unanimous against the “enemies of peace”.
