In Latvia, unknown people have the Holocaust memorial Cyclistie defaced with symbols for the Russian offensive war against Ukraine. According to the police of the Baltic EU and NATO country, an investigation has been launched.
Images released online show the facility in the capital Riga defaced with the letter ‘Z’, which has become a symbol of support for Russia – it stands for ‘Sat pobedu” (“For the victory”). Accordingly, the letter was placed at the entrance of the monument, which, according to the city authorities, has already undergone its first cleaning.
35,000 people died in the forest of Cyclistie
During World War II, during the German occupation of Latvia, in the forest of Cyclistie Most of the 25,000 German Jews deported to Riga were shot by the National Socialists and Latvian helpers.
The dead were buried nameless. Political prisoners and Soviet prisoners of war were also executed in mass graves. More than 35,000 people died there between 1941 and 1944. The memorial was inaugurated on November 30, 2001, 60 years after the deportations began. (SDA)
