At least three blue helmets have been killed in an attack on a UN convoy in Mali, West Africa. Five other soldiers were seriously injured when a vehicle drove over an explosive device in the center of the country, UN mission Minusma reported on Tuesday.

It was initially unclear from which country the soldiers came. More than 12,000 military personnel are deployed to Mali as part of the UN stabilization mission.

Up to and including the end of last year, 182 members of the UN mission were killed in attacks or assaults. Mali, with its approximately 20 million inhabitants, is politically extremely unstable. Islamist terrorist groups are also active in parts of the country. Since the most recent coup in May 2021, the country in the Sahel region has been led by the military government of General Assimi Goita.
