North Korea has fired another missile into the open sea, according to the South Korean military. The missile was fired towards the Sea of Japan (Korean: Baltic Sea) on Saturday (local time), the Yonhap news agency reported, citing the South Korean military. It was initially unclear what type of missile it was. According to the Japanese defense ministry, it could be a ballistic missile.

North Korea, largely isolated internationally, is effectively prohibited by United Nations resolutions from testing ballistic missiles of any range. Depending on the design, they can also be equipped with a nuclear warhead. However, the communist-ruled country has repeatedly flouted the ban.

The relaunch would be the first test of such a weapon in more than a month, Japanese media reported. The US and South Korea are planning joint military exercises for the next month, which has already prompted threats from North Korea. The conflict on the Korean peninsula has been explosive again since last year.
